    This is a dreadful week...
I've been seeing far too many sad stories on my f'list recently (and one of them - about Brianna Lacey, a missing 15 year old from Chicago needs all the signal boosting it can get), but this story hits far too close to home...

We learned yesterday that [livejournal.com profile] schadenkatze, someone I've known through fandom for more than a dozen years, lost her life to in a house fire early Sunday morning. Her twin [livejournal.com profile] schaden_freude (another long-term friend, and someone who had suffered a major loss not so many years ago), was only able to help their elderly mother from the home the three shared. The house itself and almost everything it contained was, as you might imagine, a great loss, but the loss of her twin sister is...unimaginable.

    ***

    From the Springfield News-Leader:
Three people in the home -- a mother in her 80s and two daughters -- were asleep when the fire began. Scott said the deceased -- one of the daughters -- died from smoke inhalation... The mother was in serious condition at St. John's Hospital.
The other daughter was not reported injured.

    ***
Through the end of the month, [dreamwidth.org profile] lunaris1013 is taking up a collection on behalf of the Seacouver Social Club (a group formed via alt.tv.highlander during the days when much of fandom centered on newsgroups). I am only too aware that times are difficult for so many people, but if you can afford to donate anything at all, paypal links can be found on Dreamwidth and LiveJournal. And if you can't afford to donate, good thoughts for her mother's recovery would be more than welcome.

    Happy belated birthday, Viki!
Here's some music for you: three songs each from four bands and singers I love. The files are at Box.net, which means (for those unfamiliar with it) that you can listen to the songs as well as download them.

Mylene Farmer. I can't help loving her songs even when they are kitchy 'cos the woman is so artistic. I love her videos too!

    California
    Je te rends ton amour
    L'ame-stram-gram

My beloved Rammstein released a new album. I can't say I loved all of it (I never do though) but I liked half of the songs.

Fruhling in Paris -- this one is the best, as for me, from this album. Also, Till singing in foreign languages is sexy :) Here he sings in French.
Rammlied -- the opening song of the album and yet another version of Rammstein including their own name in their song. Fun! And quite strong.
Pussy -- the notorious Pussy, the one of the NC-17 video, with which R+ came back after their years of silence.

My beloved Pulp. I know you know and like some songs of theirs. Do you like their Separations though? It's one of their first albums and still my favourite of theirs. Actually, this was the album that turned me from classical music to pop and rock :) I don't like what Jarvis Cocker does now and didn't like even their last album with Pulp. IMO it lost all their earlier vitality. But still, they hold a very special place in my heart :)

    Separations, the title song.
Don't You Want Me Anymore -- a bit morbid, more than a bit ironic and role-playing, and all-in-all wonderful melodically.
    Acryllic Afternoons, from His'n'Hers.

And my beloved The Cranberries. I swear, I listen to Dolores O'Riordan mewl and scream while trying not to hear the lyrics. She's, to put it mildly, not a good poet. But her energy! Her voice! I love it :)

    I Just Shot John Lennon
    Electric Blue
    Hollywood

And here's the link to the entire folder. Enjoy! :)

    Fests and Whatnot
What season is it? It's fic/art exchange season!

Okay, not that I've really had a chance to read much of anything yet since I'm hip deep in final exam grading (and finishing my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic, a process which is swiftly approaching the OMG BEARS! phase *g*), but I did want to draw your attention to the two other fests I'm currently participating in:

    1. [info]snapelyholidays. I haven't received my story yet, but for those of you who, like me, love Snape in all pairings, this year's assortment will make you think it's your birthday! Along with the always welcome Snape/Harry and Snape/Lupin and Snape/Hermione, we've already had Snape paired with Lily and McGonagall and Regulus and Sirius and Dumbledore and Lucius and Neville and Filch and Moody and Slughorn and Shacklebolt. Wheee!

    2. And then there's Good Omens. The [livejournal.com profile] go_exchange is one of my "must-do" fests each year, even though I'm only on the periphery of that fandom, and one of the reasons is because of stories like the one I received this year: a long, wonderfully written, future history that's only dystopian to the extent that a canonical Apocalypse is dystopian, which...oh. Hmm. No, okay, go back to where I said "wonderfully written" and then add original and clever. "World Without End"...go read!

Oh, and just as an addendum: I will be running [info]hp_beholder (the fic/art exchange designed to get some loving for the most unloved of HP characters) for the third time. Sign-ups will commence at the end of January/start of February (to give everybody a chance to recover from the holiday fic blitz). And just so you know, I'm giving each new participant this year a car! (*is a lying liar who lies*)

    Still Life, With Pets
    Well. Hello there, again.

I feel a little like, every time I get into a routine with LJ (and writing) again, my life blows up in a way that sends me scurrying back into disarray and hiding. Clearly my real life is jealous of our relationship, LJ, and is trying to come between us.

    Bastards.

Thank you very much, everyone who wished me a happy birthday. This was kind of a nonentity birthday for me this year (for obvious reasons) but I still had a really lovely day. Thank you for that.

I spent about a week in a funk of do-nothing—including writing—but this week, I've been more energetic, puttering around the house, getting my errands run, and getting some writing done.

I had an idea for a Criminal Minds AU that I may end up turning into an original story instead. As fanfic, I'm intimidated by the length; I'm just not up for another long story right now. As original fic, I'm intimidated by the necessary research since pretty much everything I know about the Bureau comes from TV. So I don't know.

Mostly, I'm just grateful to be writing anything. I thought about signing up for a [community profile] yuletide pinch hit, since I had to so ignobly back out, but I think it's a pipe dream; I'm feeling too shaky about my ability to produce on demand and I can't face bailing twice, especially this close to the deadline. So.

Thinking about January or February, I've still got that JDM ficathon thing I proposed a couple months ago. Which leads me to present the question to the electorate: what kind of ficathon do y'all want?

Option 1: a straight fic exchange where you make a request and you fulfill a request.

Option 2: a prompt based 'thon, where people make prompts and participants pick the prompt they want, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Option 3: free-for-all. Everyone writes whatever they want, as long as JDM is a major character.

Because it wouldn't be theholiday season without LJ acting like asshats.
Take a look at this charming news from [dreamwidth.org profile] synecdochic about LJ's decision to make Gender a mandatory field and only allow the options 'Male' or 'Female.'

Even if I didn't have friends who identify as transgender or genderqueer, I'd still be disgusted by LJ's shortsighted and, quite frankly, hateful decision, because...what will our next mandatory binary choice be? “Black or White?” “Christian or Atheist?” How many ways can you imagine you being written out of the equation?

Read the relevant linked posts, consider changing your gender listing to unspecified' while you still can (if you haven't already done it), and consider – one more time – whether it might not be smarter to leave LJ once and for all.

    SGA Santa fics are here!
[profile] sga_santa is off and running, and posting fics.

    Already.

We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas....

Hung out with [personal profile] wolfshark yesterday. In RL she's a solid, reliable sort with a healthy dose of sardonic humor. Just the type of person you'd want to run comms and see projects through to the end. *tips hat to Sharkie*

And I've now been informed that Victoria Bitter of "Bit Of Earth" donation scam infamy (who absconded with tens of thousands of dollars and tricked Sean Astin into supporting the not-actually-a-charity) has joined the HP fandom. Bitter is refusing all donations -- unless you insist. In which case there's a PayPal link.

    *head scratch*

Do I have a PayPal link? Should I have a PayPal link? I mean, if you absolutely insist....

    Switches to beta mode.
When the muse falls silent ... edit.

For the first time in years, I'm doing as much beta reading as writing.

A friend gave me a newspaper article. The time spent actually writing equals the amount that gets written.

I can take a hint. *gets back to work on that comic McFluff*

Opening Move, by Ravenna C Tan #
Ogata/Touya, NC-17, under 1000 words. Summary: Touya receives an unexpected lesson from his senpai.

Ravenna wrote this ficlet for me and it's designed to hit all my HikaGo rare pairing kinks :) Paraphrasing my comment to the author, awwwwww! It's Ogata/Touya! It's so lovely! And it's for meeee! I do wonder how Ravenna manages to combine detached with hot and make lovely things without shmoop.

    More bad news
Yesterday my grandfather passed away, he was the husband of my grandmother who had passed away over Thanksgiving. I guess after 60 years he didn't want to live without her anymore. :(

turning off comments because honestly it's kind of hard to know what to say. I'm sad but I've been expecting this for a while so that makes it a little easier.

    Artses! For me!!!
My [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays gift posted tonight and I'm all squeeful because it is gorgeous art that's so subtle and delicate and fairy-taleish. ZOMG. I heart it something fierce. \0/

Everyone should go look and tell the artist how awesome it is..and dear God, I want to live in that house so much. It would be fantastic. :D Although I suppose I'll allow Harry and Draco to live there, if they let me come visit. *G*

Also, huge thank yous to everyone who sent snowflakes earlier this week (and apologies for the belated thanks--I've been keeping myself offline in order to write the past couple of days). I meant to return the snowflake love once I got home from work on Monday night, but alas, LJ had turned the option off by the time I got to my laptop. But believe me when I say every single one of them brought a smile to my face on a day when that was sorely needed. You guys are seriously awesome. *hugs every damn one of you*

I'm really not sure my recipient is going to like the story I've written her. I've, er, sort of gone off topic with her choices.

I think I'd better give her two stories, just in case she hates this one.

Animated film rec: 9, sort of vs. Dragon Hunters
    9 9 []
Rated PG-13 for violence and scary images.
    Runtime: 79 minutes.
    Director: Shane Acker
Summary: When 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

My notes: BFF ordered me to watch this film 'cos she had seen a couple of scenes from it and fell in love with the visuals. So I did.

I liked it fine, especially the visual side, yes. Landscapes, the dolls, those factories and machines. If you like steampunk, go for it! I did find it very, very pleasant for the eyes. Not quite an eye candy 'cos it's all greyish-brownish and raw and dusty but it looks really nice.

I even liked the story for the most part. It's quite charming, and the story of a small individual becoming a hero in order to save the world, figuring things out, gathering courage and strength, well, it's cliché of course but it's a sure win as far as modern action/adventure goes. But at the same time, I found it annoying. I mean, if you have such a well-established heroic cliché, there's no need to make it even more cliché by making the villain a Hitler in such a non-metaphorical way. I mean, sometimes it's OK to believe that your spectators aren't completely stupid, so there's no need to put things in their mouth and chew for them. Sometimes you can create a more far-fetched metaphor, say, as Tolkien did in LotR or as Hiromu Arakawa does in Fullmetal Alchemist, and your audience will get it. Or on the contrary: make him Hitler, no a Hitler-like something. Don't dance around trying to side-step every dangerous thing.

Another thing that annoyed me was 7 at the very end of it. The dolls are more or less sexless, more boy/men-like than girl/woman-like but whatever. I liked it that the story wasn't about love, that it wasn't about how family saves everything -- which, let's be frank, Hollywood feeds us so much as to make one want to stay single forever. But then [spoiler]7 acquired some distinctly lady-like expressions, nearly batting eyelashes. WTF? Will they now hold hand and knit baby dolls or something?[/end spoiler]

And this leads me to the following. I liked Dragon Hunters much better (my review). They are seemingly nothing alike, Dragon Hunters and 9. It's just that they both are about small people saving the world and that something in the animation looks similar to me. So, while I'm ready to rave about Dragon Hunters for ages, this review is about 9 and regretfully, I'm not prepared to squeal about it. Yes, I enjoyed it. Yes, it's a real pleasure for the eyes. But I expected more. The animation made me expect more originality from the plot, and it might be completely my fault that I was so ready to fall in love but in the end, merely liked it. But like it I did. Give it a try!
